Country-style French toast with maple sugar and caramelized apples

20 minutes

  • 6 slices Origine country-style loaf
  • 1 egg
  • 375 ml (1½ cups) milk
  • 125 ml (½ cup) maple syrup
  • 45 ml (3 tbsp.) maple sugar
  • 60 ml (2 tbsp.) butter
  • 1 Granny Smith apple, peeled and thinly sliced

Mix the egg, milk and 2 tbsp. of maple syrup. Thoroughly soak the bread slices with this mixture. Sprinkle with half the maple sugar. Melt 1 tbsp. of butter in a skillet. Fry the apple slices for 3 minutes and turn over. Pour 2 tbsp. of maple syrup on the apple slices, fry for another 3 minutes and let stand. Melt the remaining butter. Brown the bread slices soaked with the mixture – the sides sprinkled with maple sugar should be facing down – for 3 minutes. Sprinkle the remaining maple sugar, turn over and fry for another 3 minutes. Top each serving with apple slices and drizzle with maple syrup.
